IT training resources

This document is dedicated to helping you access vendor and general training/information for IT and sales. Not every vendor is fully filled out, so if you see something missing, please let me know & I will add it. Not every entry is filled out yet nor does this list every single resource, so please contribute for everyone's benefit.

 

Linked-in Learning (formerly Lynda.com)

Anyone in Texas (and most likely other states) can get this free from Public Libraries. The example below is for TX, but for those out of state, check with your local library & if they don't have it, other libraries in your state.

  1. Apply for an e-card from just about any library in the state (such as Houston public library) & that will grant you access to linkedin learning. 
  2. https://askhpl.houstonlibrary.org/library-card/faq/358322
  3. You would use your library card & pin on the following link
  4. From here you have full access to all of linkedin learning
  5. You can also access LL via mobile devices as well with this same library card/pin

 

Udemy Business (for FREE)

This example uses TX Public Libraries (again, other state libraries may offer this as well)

On a Web browser 

  1. Get a TX public library card in person from your local Library. Some libraries will allow for a digital card acquired online, but this process needs a "real" card/account. Plus, there is a ton of other physical/digital resources available beyond Udemy (movies/audiobooks/ebooks/music/language/etc)
  2. Get said library to provide a TEXSHARE card (fyi it needs to be renewed yearly). If your local library is not part of "TEXSHARE" then contact another city's library nearby, however, most do participate in TEXSHARE
  3. Create a Gale account here https://login.gale.com/ & logon
  4. Search for & select "public library" in the list, select, enter the library card number
  5. Search for "udemy" in the list of databases & select (feel free to browse & check out all the other free options too!)
  6. It usually prompts to sign into the gale.com account again, click the logon link & it should redirect to the https://gale.udemy.com/organization/home/ page. From here search for whatever, such as Azure/AWS/etc. Bookmark the page to make it easier to visit later

From Mobile devices (after you have your account setup)

  1. On a mobile device/tablet download the "Udemy Business" app 
  2. Use "gale" for the organization's name
  3. As done above, search for & select the public library in the list, select, enter the library card number
  4. It should prompt to sign into the gale.com account, if not click the Sign In link & proceed with entering the gale.com account created earlier (check the "remember me" box too). It should then redirect you back to your app, if not you may have to try the Sign in button again)
  5. The mobile app can download classes offline, cast to TV, etc

 

O’Reilly online free from a TX Public Library (again, other state libraries may offer this as well)

O'Reilly Media - Technology and Business Training (oreilly.com)

  1. O'Reilly online resource now available - City of Round Rock (roundrocktexas.gov)
  2. This one requires you to physically visit the Round Rock Public Library Library - City of Round Rock (roundrocktexas.gov)
  3. The library card is free to anyone who is a TX state resident with a TX ID Get a Library Card - City of Round Rock (roundrocktexas.gov)
